Wellness in the Workplace
How to Create an Environment Where People Can Thrive

With Americans spending 90% of their time indoors, building designers and operators must be cognizant of the potential impacts that the indoor environment may have on its occupants. Industry has responded to this need rapidly over the past 5 years, with certification such as the WELL Building Standard emerging, along with a growing body of research quantifying the relationship between building and  occupant productivity.  Join Shona O’Dea, Building Performance Analyst at DLR Group, to learn how to make sure your facility is supporting occupant wellness through everything from low-cost no cost measures that you can implement tomorrow, to reach certifications such as the WELL Building Standard.

Learning Objectives
After listening to this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain the impact of Indoor Environmental Quality on Occupant Wellbeing
  • List the advantages and disadvantages of wellness certifications available
  • Make small changes in their facility towards occupant wellness

About the Speaker
Shona O'Dea, DLR Group

Shona’s focus on efficiency and indoor environmental quality is an important component of DLR Group’s Building Performance team, supporting the firm's pursuit of sustainable building design and operation. Her primary goal is to challenge people to think differently about the way they design and operate buildings; advising teams from sustainable goal setting to efficient operations. She uses building simulation to help designers quantify energy savings and understand the interactions of building design with the mechanical systems and with the environment.

Born and raised in Ireland, Shona earned an honors degree in Building Services Engineering from the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland's leading sustainable building engineering program, and moved to the Midwest as part of the Atlantis dual master’s program in Sustainability, Technology and Innovation at Purdue University. She currently serves as Young Engineers in ASHRAE Region VI Coordinator, Vice President of the Chicago Chapter of IBPSA, Board Member and Chair of Sustainability Committee for Chicago Chapter of IFMA.
