Past, Present and Future of the Facilities Role

 

The first FM role was created in 1968 - how has it evolved 52 years later?  Join moderator Derek Rusch, Territory Manager with Herman Miller and IFMA Chicago Career Services Committee Chair, for a roundtable discussion of how the facilities role has changed and where we see it evolving in the future. 

About the Panelists

Jerry DiCola is the Senior Director, Real Estate and Facilities Operations for Horizon Therapeutics, Inc., a specialty biopharmaceutical company focused on improving patients’ lives by identifying, developing, acquiring and commercializing differentiated products that address unmet medical needs.  As an IFMA, certified instructor Jerry has been facilitating IFMA courses at Northern Illinois University since 2008.  Most recently, board member for Disability Inclusion, an organization which commitment is, “To collaborate with purpose to promote the full inclusion of people with disabilities, to inspire accessible innovation for all, and to foster cultures of inclusion”.   In addition, an active member of the Aspire Facility Committee.  He was a chapter president for the Chicago Chapter of IFMA from 2013 to 2015.

He has direct responsibilities for property and facility management of Horizon’s newly acquired new campus in Deerfield which is 660,000 of owned space and several acres of other campus amenities.  He was most recently the facilities leader for 165,000-leased space in Lake Forest, IL and provides consultative support to Horizon Therapeutics’ two international offices and three additional domestic offices.  Prior to joining Horizon, Jerry was the Director, Facilities with Brinks Gilson and Lione for 10+ years where he oversaw 130,000 square feet of leased space in the NBC Tower and the firm’s five satellite offices. He has a strong passion for instructional opportunities and disability inclusion.  He feels honored to have assisted many with furthering their careers in facilities management as well as identifying opportunities for individuals with disabilities. 


Maureen Ehrenberg, FRICS, CRE, LAI is CEO and Co-Founder of Blue Skyre, Innovating the Built Environment (BSI). An internationally recognized expert on real estate business transformation, strategic redesign for the future of work, and digital facility management, Ehrenberg serves as an advisor and board member to global organizations, investors, and real estate technology providers. With more than 25 years' experience, she has deep expertise in providing real estate advice and services to companies around the world. Before founding Blue Skyre, she was Global Head of Real Estate Operations and Strategic Services for WeWork. She has held global executive roles with JLL, CBRE, and Grubb & Ellis Company. She serves on the Americas Board of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS); and the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Overseas Building Operations, Industry Advisory Group (IAG). She is a management trustee for the International Union of Operating Engineers; a trustee of Roosevelt University; and a member of the Real Estate Advisory Board for the New York State Teachers Retirement System (NYSTRS). She has also served on the Global Boards of CoreNet Global, IFMA (International Facility Management Association), and OCSRE (Open Standards Consortium for Real Estate).

A frequent speaker and author, Maureen Ehrenberg has been recognized as an industry thought leader with an Innovator of the Year Award from CoreNet Global, the Chair's Citation Award from IFMA, The Julie Devine Digital Impact, and Lifetime Achievement Awards for Vision in technology from RealComm and has received several awards and recognition for leadership and service in the real estate industry.


Rachel Stieger is an experienced Facilities Professional with a demonstrated history of working in the real estate industry and Fortune 500 companies. She is one of the rare individuals who Graduated with a Bachelors in Science (BS) focused in Facilities Management from Ferris State University. She was originally attending the University for an Architectural degree with a passion for historical preservation, furniture design, and Interior Design. Recently supporting Space Planning and Move Management for a multinational Tech Giant, she seized a new opportunity with JLL in the midst of a pandemic and joined the Bank of America Account as an Associate Facilities Manager. Skilled in communication, time management, space planning, move management, client relationship management, project management, and vendor management. She's eager to grow in the industry and gain a competitive edge by aspiring to earn her Facilities Management Professional Certificate.

Rachel would like to be seen as a mentor for young professionals beginning their careers within Facilities Management, and a resource for those wanting to learn more about the field and opportunities.


Linda Murdix is the Global Director of Facilities at RJ O'Brien, a futures brokerage trading company headquartered in Chicago. She is responsible for firmwide management of office space and real estate leases, including office moves and interior design.  With a strong focus on customer service, Linda has a proven ability to successfully coordinate complex office renovations, while effectively maximizing cost savings. 

Linda has won numerous awards including IFMA Chicago Chapter’s Distinguished Leader Award and Facility of the Year for innovative design and best practices in facilities management. This project earned LEED certification by implementing green design features and reducing the engineering firm’s carbon footprint.  Linda is a Certified Facilities Manager (CFM) and is the President of the Chicago Chapter of IFMA.


About the Moderator


Derek Rusch
has over 18 years working with the furniture industry.  During his career, he has been involved with many innovative projects from his past positions with a design firm, representative group, dealer and manufacturer.  Prior to Herman Miller, Derek worked at major manufacturers Knoll and Teknion.  His experience in managing sales in North America comes from HOWE where he served as North America Sales Manager for 4 years.   
He is also the founder of Insightful Chicago that created a 5-panel discussion in 2020.  The vision was to create a community with inspiring stories and conversations for Women, Minorities, and the LGBTQ community in the CRE industry.

Derek has a creative energy working with clients and responds quickly with problem solving results.  Derek has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Masters of Arts from American University.
